This form is used to register or title your vehicle in North Dakota.
Form SFN 2872, Application For Certificate Title and Registration of a Vehicle, or the North Dakota Vehicle Registration Form, is a form issued by the North Dakota Department of Transportation. With Form SFN 2872, you can apply for the following:
Aside from filing for those, you can also use this form to apply for duplicates of your plates, tabs, registration card, and title. The ND Vehicle Registration Form is also required when filing a transfer of title.
This makes Form SFN 2872 exceptionally useful for a number of concerns. However, keep in mind that this form is only applicable in North Dakota. If you are from another state, please ask your local DOT what form to use and the process to follow.
The ND Vehicle Registration is a form with many pages but with patience and reading through these instructions, you will be able to fill it out quite easily.
Section I — This Application is for
Check the box beside the item to determine what the application is for. Check only one box.
If your application is for a duplicate, you must identify your reason for duplication. Circle the reason that is most applicable to your situation.
Section II - Applicant Information
Here is where you will enter your legal information.
Applicant’s Legal Name
Indicate what type of entity is doing the application, check the applicable box, and put the legal and complete name of the entity.
Mailing Address, City, State, ZIP Code, and County
Input your complete and current mailing address, the city, the state, ZIP Code, and your current County.
Drivers License or FEIN
Choose whether you will use your Driver’s License number or Federal Employer Identification Number. Tick the box of your chosen identification and input the number on the line provided below.
Telephone Number
Indicate your current and serviceable telephone number.
Co-Applicant’s Legal Name
If you are applying with a co-applicant, indicate what type of entity is serving as your Co-Applicant by checking the applicable box and putting the legal name of the entity.
Mailing Address, City, State, ZIP Code, and County
Input the complete and current mailing address, the city, the state, ZIP Code, and the current County of your Co-Applicant.
Telephone Number
Indicate your Co-Applicant’s current and serviceable telephone number.
In addition to this, below the Co-Applicant Section is a set of boxes that indicate whether or not the nature of the ownership of the vehicle is.
This will indicate whose signature or signatures will be required to transfer ownership, license plates, and fees. It can also be referred to when making loans and applying for a refund.
Check the box besides the relationship that would be most applicable for you.
Vehicle is Leased
Indicate whether or not the Vehicle is Leased by ticking the box beside the clause.
North Dakota Title Number
If the vehicle that this application is for already has a North Dakota Title Number of the Vehicle, indicate it here.
Section III - Vehicle Inform
This section is to be filled up with information about the vehicle. Only the information applicable to your vehicle is required.
Year
Enter the year the vehicle was manufactured.
Make
Enter the brand that manufactured your vehicle.(e.g. Toyota, Chevrolet, Lexus).
Model
Enter the specific name of the vehicle as it is named by the brand (Camry, Lexus RX, Chevrolet Equinox).
Body Style
Enter the shape that your vehicle classifies as (Sedan, Coupe, SUV).
Vehicle Identification Number
Input your vehicle's VIN, the unique number given by the automotive industry used to identify your vehicle.
Color
Input your vehicle’s current color.
Weight
Indicate the Weight of the vehicle.
Previous Weight
If your vehicle suffered a change of weight, indicate the previous weight here.
Mobile Home/Trailer Length
If you are applying for a Trailer or a Mobile Home, indicate its length here.
Date 1st used in ND Highways
Input the exact when you used your vehicle on North Dakota Highways.
Odometer Reading
Enter the number that is currently on your vehicle’s odometer.
Odometer Indicator
Indicate whether your odometer has complications by checking the applicable box.
Section IV - Motor Vehicle Purchaser’s Certificate
When registering a vehicle, this section is where you must input all information concerning the purchasing of the vehicle.
Full Purchase Price (Rebate excluded)
Indicate the full price spent to purchase the vehicle. Exclude the Rebate.
Less Trade - in Allowance
Indicate the amount that the seller has redacted from the full price through trade-in.
Less Total Loss Allowance
Indicate how much Total Loss Care subtracted from the full price.
Difference or the Subtotal of the items above
This is the total value after adding and subtracting the Full Purchase Price, Trade-in Allowance, and Total Loss Allowance. Do not fill this out.
Tax (5% of the Subtotal)
This is the tax added to the purchase (5% of the subtotal). Do not fill this out.
Abandoned Vehicle Disposal Fee
This is the fee that is paid for abandoned vehicles. This is $1.50.
Title Fee
For acquiring a title, the title fee is required. This is $5.00.
Vehicle License Fee
Enter the assigned license fee.
SRP
Indicate the suggested retail price of the vehicle.
License plate Credit Amount
Input the credit amount assigned to your license plate.
Plate or Credit Transfer Fee
When you have applied for a plate, input the credit transfer fee (this is $5.00).
Branch Fee
Input the fee that is applicable to your branch.
Duplicate Plate Fee
If you are applying for a duplicate plate, the fee will be $5.00.
Total Fees Due
This is where the sum total of all the values above is calculated. Do not fill this out.
Year and Make of Trade-In
If you had a Trade-In, indicate the Year and Make of the trade-in.
VIN of Trade-In
Indicate the Vehicle Identification Number of the Trade in.
Tax Exempt
If the vehicle is exempt from Tax, refer to the back of the form wherein you will find Section VII, which is a list of all valid reasons for exemptions. Input the listed number of the reason that is most applicable to your exemption.
Section V - Dealer and Lienholder Information
This section is on the information of the dealer or lienholder of the vehicle.
Date Acquired
Indicate the exact date when you have acquired the vehicle. Beside this line, indicate the state of the vehicle by checking one box
Acquired From
Input the name of the dealership or the name of the business that sold you the car.
ND Dealer No.
Input the North Dakotan Dealer number of the business that sold you the car.
First Lienholder
Enter the full legal name of your lienholder. The title of your vehicle will be mailed to them.
Mailing Address, City, State, and ZIP Code
Indicate the full and current mailing address of your Lienholder along with the city, state, and ZIP Code.
Second Lienholder
If you have two lienholders, indicate the name of the second lienholder here.
Mailing Address, City, State, and ZIP Code
Indicate the full and current mailing address of your second Lienholder along with the city, state, and ZIP Code.
Signature
Enter your signature here.
Date
Indicate the date of signing the application.
If you are applying with a Co-Applicant, their signature is also required in this Section as well, regardless of the relationship you have chosen in Section II.
Section VII - Tax Exemption
As mentioned in Section IV, this is simply an extension of that section as it is the reference of the valid reasons for tax exemption.
1. If the vehicle was a gift, indicate the relationship with the person from whom the vehicle is.
Indicate the name of the receiver and specify the relationship.
2. This exemption is applicable if the applicant is from a Joint Tenant with Right to Survivorship relationship and is now putting the vehicle under one name only.
3. This is applicable if the vehicle is inherited.
4. If the applicant has undergone a change of name and must reassign the legal name in their form, indicate the reason for changing the name.
5. If the vehicle was acquired through a lease purchase agreement, check the applicable situation.
A. If tax was paid on the total lease consideration, tax is due on the lease buyout amount.
B. If tax was paid on the full purchase price and you have been in possession of the vehicle over one year, no tax is due.
C. If tax was paid on the full purchase price and you have been in possession of the vehicle for less than one year, tax is due on the lease buyout amount.
6. If the vehicle is a state fleet, this item is applicable.
7. If you have undergone a lien change, indicate your current odometer reading.
8. If the vehicle is for interstate carriage, indicate its account number.
9. Tax paid to the state that grants reciprocity to North Dakota (proof required).
10. The form has no Item 10.
11. Applicable if the vehicle is from a Dealer resale (USED).
12. Applicable if the vehicle is from a Dealer resale (NEW).
13. If the vehicle is from a tribal claim, this is applicable. However, Form SFN 18085, Tribal Claim For Tax Exemption) is required.
14. If the applicant is a Disabled American Veteran or a former Prisoner of War, this item is applicable as long as the Veterans Association has provided them a letter of eligibility.
15. If the applicant is a senior citizen or a mobility-impaired person and the vehicle is a nonprofit, corporation-owned bus, this item is applicable.
16. If the applicant is mobility impaired and the vehicle is specially equipped for their disability, this item is applicable.
17. If the vehicle is homemade, this item is applicable.
18. If the vehicle is from a newly formed organization, indicate the date it was formed and what type of organization it is by checking one of the boxes.
19. If the vehicle is from a newly dissolved organization, indicate the date it was formed and what type of organization it is by checking one of the boxes.
20. If the vehicle is a school bus, this is applicable.
21. If the vehicle was assembled by the motor dealer, this item is applicable granted that the applicant can provide a form SFN 22056.
22. If the vehicle is a transfer from a family trust, this item is applicable.
23. If you are from the military, indicate your current situation and provide SFN 17147, Military Claim for Tax Exemption.
24. If the vehicle is a mobile home, Form SFN 3004, North Dakota State Board of Equalization Statement of Mobile Home Full Consideration.
25. If the applicant is from North Dakota political subdivisions, this is applicable.
26. If the vehicle is the result of repossession, provide SFN 2880, Repossession Affidavit.
27. If the vehicle is a non-resident military lease, this is applicable
28. If the vehicle is from a total loss settlement or has been Salvaged, this is applicable.
29. If there are other reasons not mentioned above, specify here.
Section VII
This section is to inform you that if your vehicle is applicable under the Damage Disclosure Law, they must attach Form 18609 Damage Disclosure Statement to this Form SFN 2872.
The Damage Disclosure Law includes the following:
Trailers, off-highway vehicles, and snowmobiles are EXCLUDED from this list.
