What is Form 8822?

Form 8822, Change of Address, or also referred to as Change of Address for Individual, Gift, Estate, or Generation Skipping Transfer Tax Returns, is used by taxpayers to notify the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that they have changed their home mailing address.

If this change of home mailing address will affect the mailing address of the taxpayer’s children who have also filed their own income tax returns, the taxpayer must then complete a separate Form 8822 for each of his or her children. If a representative is filling out Form 8822 for a certain taxpayer, he or she must attach a copy of his or her power of attorney to this form. If a taxpayer would like to change both his or her home address and business address, he or she must fill out Form 8822-B, Change of Address or Responsible Party ? Business.

It normally takes 4 to 6 weeks for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to process a taxpayer’s change of home mailing address.

If a taxpayer or his or her spouse has changed their names because of marriage, divorce, or other legal reasons, they must make sure to notify the Social Security Administration (SSA) of their new legal names so that the SSA will have the same names on their records. This will prevent any delays in processing their tax returns and issuing any refunds the both of them may have.

A taxpayer must make sure to include any apartment, room, or suite number in his or her new address. If the taxpayer has a P.O. box and not a regular home mailing address, he or she must enter the box number instead. This must only be done if the post office does not deliver to his or her home mailing address.

If a taxpayer has a foreign home mailing address, he or she must follow the country’s practice for entering the postal code. When a taxpayer is filling out this form, he or she must not abbreviate the name of the country.

In cases wherein the taxpayer receives his or her mail in care of a third party, the taxpayer must enter “?” followed by the full legal name of the third party, the street address, or P.O. box.
