Form 2350 is used to ask for an extension of time to file your tax return only if you expect to file Form 2555 and you need the time to meet either the bona fide residence test or the physical presence test to qualify for the foreign earned income exclusion and/or the foreign housing exclusion or deduction.
Form 2350, Application for Extension of Time to File U.S. Income Tax Return, or also referred to as IRS Form 2350, U.S. Tax Extension Form 2350, or Form 2350 Extension, is used by citizens of the United States and resident aliens abroad to ask for an extension of time to file their tax return. Taxpayers can file this form only if they expect to file Form 2555, Foreign Earned Income, or 2555-EZ, Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, and need the time to meet either the bona fide residence test or the physical presence test to qualify for the foreign earned income exclusion and/or the foreign housing exclusion or deduction.
All other taxpayers must fill out Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return if they would like to request an automatic extension of time to file a U.S. individual income tax return. Furthermore, taxpayers must not file Form 2350 more than once, each time they move overseas. If a taxpayer has met the qualifications for the “bona fide residence test” or the “physical presence test,” he or she has remained abroad continuously for the following tax years and requires an extension, he or she must file Form 4868.
IRS Form 2350 does not extend the time to pay a U.S. resident or a resident alien’s taxes. If he or she does not pay the required amount for a calendar year return by the due date, the taxpayer might owe interest and may be charged certain penalties.
A taxpayer is required to fill out IRS Extension Form 2350 if all three of the following apply:
