In the state of South Dakota anyone who has lost, had their title stolen, or damaged can obtain a duplicate title through the South Dakota Motor Vehicles Division (MVD). This process can be done in person or by mail, whichever is more convenient for you.
Form MV-010, State of South Dakota Application for a Duplicate Certificate of Title, or also referred to as the South Dakota Duplicate Title Application Form, is a legal form used to apply for a duplicate motor vehicle or boat title. Any individual who resides in South Dakota that has lost his or her title, had it stolen, damaged, or mutilated can obtain a duplicate title through the South Dakota Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
The South Dakota Duplicate Title Application Form must be signed in front of a notary public and must also be submitted with the notary public’s seal affixed. Moreover, an odometer reading is required for motor vehicles 9 years old or newer and for motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 16,000 pounds or less.
If a lien is indicated on the title record, a lien release must be submitted along with this form. You may also let your lienholder complete Section B of the South Dakota Duplicate Title Application Form.
If you plan on having the duplicate title mailed to someone other than yourself (the owner), the mailing instructions must be indicated on the form, specifically, on Section A.
If you happen to authorize someone else to sign the South Dakota Duplicate Title Application Form for you through power of attorney, a copy of the power of attorney form is required to be submitted. The original power of attorney form should be retained in the event it is needed for assigning the duplicate title.
